Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph just on the turn from summer to autumn, using a single light source and a black cloth background in our lounge (yes I have a very patient wife who tolerates my photography, my antique collecting etc)

Time

I shot the photograph in the afternoon and tried to elimate all the ambient light - not totally effectively however.

Lighting

Lighting was a simple led torch in this case. I do have a couple of old studio flashes but actually seeing the lightfall was valuable in this case.

Equipment

Canon 500D with an 18-55 zoom, on an old Linhoff tripod.

Inspiration

I suppose the inspiration was the much quoted Ansell Adams opinion - to the effect that "if you must shoot colour then at least have red in the shot". It also was a way to use and old church 'giving plate' that I recently picked up at auction - although a small part of the shot I like the grain and the over all warmth of the wood (NZ Rimu I think)

Editing

Yes I used Lightroom 4 to clean up the ambient lighting and some stray highlights from a slightly dirty background.

The Canon 500D; 18-55mm Canon zoom and 55-250mm Canon zoom; a Canon 50mm; a Tamron 105mm; a Tamron 2x converter; Canon Speedligfht 580EXII and a variety of filters

Feedback

In my opinion photography is about using light and perhaps no more importantly than in situations like this. The subject is not extraordinary so it becomes important to try and give depth and visual interest with the use of light. I don't think I have managed to create a perfect photograph here and so I will keep striving toward that goal.
