Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken at our city Historic Downtown Mall in Virginia, which consists of shops, cafes, restaurants and a movie theater, all located along seven blocks of brick- and tree-lined streets.Time
Mid-afternoon, somewhere between 12 and 3:00 p.m.Lighting
The location of the subject was set perfectly, as the sun was behind me.Equipment
This image was shot with a Nikon D3200, and a Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200mm F4.0-F5.6G IF-ED VR lens.Inspiration
I'm fairly new to photography, and am drawn to Street Photography. On this particular day, my mother and I went specifically to allow me to practice using my, at the time, new camera. This was the first day I attempted Street Photography. It's typical to see various street performers at this location, and this performer was seated and performing across from the bench we were on. He played his harmonica beautifully, and managed to smile at everyone while playing. The first time he caught me watching him play, he gave me a wonderful smile, so I just had to point my camera his way, and hope for another :)Editing
I always shoot in Raw. I ended up with 2 edited copies of the original image, and the black and white was by far my favorite. I adjusted the tone by increasing the Highlights, and lowering the Shadows. I completely decreased the Saturation, and adjusted the black and white tones. In my camera bag
The first thing I always pack is my DX 55-200mm lens...this is by far my favorite, and what I use the most. I then pack my DX 35mm, and DX 18-55mm lenses. I also have a Polorizer that I keep in my bag, along with my Nikon D3200.Feedback
First and foremost, for everyone, do your best to always try to have your camera with you. I tend to take my bag with me every time I walk out my door.I almost never attempt street photography if I am alone...for personal safety reasons.Strangers don't always smile and play nice when you take their picture. Look for interesting subjects and focus on the story. For street photography, the story and subject are possibly the most important. This particular shot, I used my bigger lens, which I would not typically use for street photography, focused at 200mm, in order to get close up, with minimal background. In my opinion, a wide angle works best if you can get close enough to your subject. Find the story in the photo, and have fun with it!
