This image is one of my favorite long exposure photos until now. I took the shot in the beautiful city of Hallstatt in Austria on a very cold winter night (-16 degrees).Time
It was around 17:00 local time and I was waiting and framing my shoot for about 40 minutes. For this shoot have used the tripod and a gradual ND filter. For longer battery life I had with me a battery grip for Nikon D800 and 2 fully charged batteries. And I didn't stay longer than one hour for that night because the temperature have reached to -19 degrees. A big surprise was the camera which apparently had no problem with the cold what so ever. No lag and the displays were working perfectly. So...good job Nikon:)Lighting
About the lighting I can say that I was waiting for the perfect moment and I didn't do any fancy tricks to that. Landscape photography is all about being ready for that perfect shot and also be patient enough.Equipment
For this specific image I have used the following: - Nikon D800 - Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 G - a Fancier carbon tripod - a cookin gradual ND 3x filterInspiration
Inspiration comes when I saw some beautiful shots from a internet site illustrating the city in the summer, and immediately I got the question in my head: 'how can it be in the winter?". And since I have moved from Romania to Austria, everything was clear and also a loot easyer. And when i got the first free weekend without any other things to resolve, I said to my girlfriend "get ready because tomorrow we are going to Hallstatt" and that was it.Editing
For the editing part, I kept it simple and add minimal tweeks, nothing dramatic. For this image I didn't want to ruin the natural beauty of the scene with unneeded post processing or extreme editing. Sometimes less is more, and I believe this was the case.In my camera bag
I don't have a standard equipment order. I rather think in advance for my projects and just take what I need. For example if I know I want a star trail image I will take my Nikon D4s with a 14-24 f2.8 and a tripod. If I want to capture some shoots in the city I will have my Nikon D800, 14-24, 24-70 and maybe a 70-200 and a SB910. So in the end depends on what I intend to take pictures of.Feedback
My advice for all the photographers who want to take a similar shoot is: - First of all take good winter clothes because if you are cold all the rest is irrelevant, - take 2 batteries with you and 2 cards just in case, - Be there 1-2 hours earlyer to have enough time to scout the place for the perfect angle. - And don't trey to get that perfect shoot and not to run around hoping to get 10 portofolio shoots in one night. Pick quality over quantity! This is all I have to say. I wish you all good light!
