This was taken in the late afternoon but the area was still in full sun.Lighting
Getting sharp images of hummingbirds requires a lot of light or a flash set up. I prefer working with natural light, usually in the mornings up until ten AM or in the afternoons between two to five PM in areas that the bird will fall in full sunlight. the earlier or later times gives me less harsh light and a bit of shadow helps define the subject and background. This image was late afternoon and produced some lovely golden light for the bird and backgroundEquipment

I've always been inspired to challenge myself and get some images of the lovely flying jewels in the gardens. I don't use feeders to attract them so have to observe their favorite flowers and set up and wait for them to come in.Editing
I normally do very little post processing on my bird images. Most times it's just to adjust contrast and temperature levels and perhaps clone out a branch or item that doesn't add to the composition.In my camera bag
I now carry a Canon 7DII, Canon 1Ds MKIII, Canon 24/105, Canon 100mm macro lens, Canon 600mm IS II, 1.4 and 2.0 extenders, extension tubes, flash, ring flash various filters including an adjustable ND filter. Lightweight and heavyweight Gitzo tripods, ball head, Wimberley gimbal head, extra batteries, lens cleaning kit. (and the kitchen sink..... LOL no really)Feedback
The best way to photograph hummingbirds or any bird for that matter is to spend time observing their habits and where they routinely feed or roost. I actually plant various salvias, cupheas, fuchsias etc. that I know will attract hummingbirds. They make the rounds of the various flowers over the course of the day and I set up where I'm going to have good light and backgrounds. Then I wait! and wait, and wait. Patience is a major factor in getting these images.
