I took this pic on the 9th hole at the local golf course. I live in Fernie B.C. There are not many Maple trees in the Rocky Mountains, the land of golden leaf Aspen and Cotton wood.Time
A crisp clear early fall afternoon. About 4 pm. The golden hour arrives at different times depending on location, season. Become familiar with the light in your home area. It amazes me how many folks don't know where north south is. That should be part of every photographers arsenal.Lighting
Taking advantage of the ' Golden Hour ' is quite different in a bowl made of mountains compared to the prairies or ocean-scapes. The sun goes down early. Around here early October days have the aroma of hibernation. So sunlit scenes like this are few and far between. Though this particular season golf lasted until the 12th of the month. Then the snow arrived and skiing was on our minds.Equipment
This was a picture of luck. I always carry some make of camera. In my golf bag this season I had a Nikon Coolpix S9400. A nice little pocket rig which got ruined a couple weeks later when a rogue wave filled the front pocket of my waders with sea water whilst salmon fishing out on the west coast.Inspiration
I had been observing this tree since it had been planted 10 years earlier. Finally it matured in size and colour. That perfect day arrived. Fresh snow on the peaks in the background, blue sky and clouds. I still keep a lookout every fall for this tree and that special day. ISO-125, 1/400 sec., at F-stop f/5.6. Lets not be fooled, with these little pocket rigs all I could was set the ISO.Editing
Well I have all the tools for post processing but I have yet to present a picture that has been altered. I shoot what I see and if that is not the best representation of what I saw it's a no go. Sure I have been told the sky could have deeper blue and a little darker definition in the clouds. That is not what was there. Simple .In my camera bag
In this instance it was in my golf bag. Otherwise I have a D-7000, Tamron 200 to 600 zoom, Tamron 70 to 300 zoom with macro, a Tamron 18 to 270 zoom with Piezo Drive for video purposes plus a Nikkor 18 to 70. Various filters for all. You know cleaning tools, batteries and chargers. SB 910 speed light flash. But lets face it I am a '' gadget crazed amateur '. For fun I have a Holga 120 and a 35mm film Contax RT2. This year I added the Nikon P 1000 to the collection. Oh I forgot the Lumix FZ70 and that darn I-phone 8.Feedback
To capture something similar don't forget to take a few vertical pics. It is a simple shot. Very clear subject with uncluttered background. The framing bu those spruce trees, well it doesn't get any better. It took years of waiting for the right elements to come together. Patience, As soon as I saw the grounds crew plant this tree, I knew what I wanted to make this photo. I am looking forward to photographing it for years to come as it matures. This is the only red maple tree in the valley that I am aware of. Study your location. As you can see an at home location can be as exciting as travelling the world. At least for me, perhaps I say that to justify my lack of world travel. Know your camera. Cameras render colour like the variety of films used to.
