Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the wall of the ancient city of Xian in China. A couple in our tour group hired one of the many bicycles to ride on top of this massive wall.

Time

This would have been taken early afternoon which is probably not the best time for taking photos of people but there was a lot of cloud cover which softened the light and made very little to no shadowing.

Lighting

I had never really tried to do a panning shot before so I took the opportunity to give it a try. I think it tells a good story.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 with the standard kit lens (18-105mm) hand held panning the camera as they road by.

Inspiration

Something I had never done before. You never know unless you try.

Editing

This has had minimal to no post-processing done. Maybe minimal colour enhancement?

In my camera bag

Since this photo was taken I have increased my equipment that I carry but back then it was very minimal.

Feedback

Just give it a go and if it does not work out try again. When panning it is recommended that you turn off the OS or VR etc so it does not try correct the movement that you are looking for and use a shutter speed which is fast enough to freeze your subject but slow enough to blur the back ground. Try to do the panning smoothly with out up and down movements. With digital photography if you take 100 photos to get 1 great shot it doesn't matter but even some of the not so good shots can turn out remarkably good if you know your post-processing software.
