This is a digitized portrait that I took with my Mamiya 645. I used the technique Low Key photography to accentuate the subject's personality and his situation. It was shot in a low light area in an alley way with a shaft of soft light striking a portion of his body.

Black and white photography is a powerful tool to leave out distractions. In this way it allows the picture to tell the story of this man. His dressing, posture countenance tells us a great deal of the hardship he is undergoing.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in down town Kuala Lumpur some years ago. He was sitting in a partial shaded area by a wall in an old part of the city.

Time

This was in the later part of the morning when the sun was just about peeking through the cracks and open alley ways of the sleepy city. This is the time when time as it were crawled and the city begins to be energised for another busy and bustling day.

Lighting

It was low light, just enough to light his head and side body. This was a shaft of light that filtered through the spaces of the covered side walk.

Equipment

The photo was shot with a Mamiya 645 80mm lens No flash was used. I used a Sekonic light meter to get my readings in incident mode. As this was shot hand-held, the slowest speed I used was 1/60 sec at f4..0 using ISO 160 B/W film.

Inspiration

What struck me was the stark contrast that the scene here at that point of time had to the bustling life beyond this man's life... alone, cowed down, and dejected. The pale light that barely lit him brought out the essence of what life could be like without any hope. It was the quality of this illumination that spurred me to take this shot. A man in dire need.

Editing

I processed the negative at home did some dodging and burning to highlight the subject photographed. Finally the print was digitized at a high resolution of 600 dpi at least.

In my camera bag

Doing photography using film is quite different from digital photography. You cannot go wrong. The tools that I carry normally are a flash gun, another camera like a nikon body and 50mm lens. Filters are important. I the bag are a ND 4 filter, Skylight an UV filters.

Feedback

If anyone is trying to capture a picture similar to this one, you have to have the eye of the camera. See the location, direction of light and its quality. Bracket your shots. With a digital camera a lot is done automatically. Go manual.
