Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a quaint, little cafe in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia called The Old Apothecary. It is a rustic and vintage building, with a modern twist on an 'Alice In Wonderland' styled design.

Time

It was around the late afternoon back in the winter of 2016; it was such a rainy, miserable snowy day, yet something truly moving and beautiful occurred that day. That was the day Rebecca (model pictured) and I, decided to collaborate and produce a Black and White portrait series that would stem the way for my future career in portrait photography.

Lighting

In black and white photography, detail, composition, shadows and contrast are the component of what makes this medium of photography different from any other style. I want the viewers to be able to draw close attention to the shapes and lines in her face, and how it contrasts with the white window, how her features are heavily accentuated. Here, I have depicted a natural beauty, with the manipulation and proper use of shadow, contrast to successfully show how each and every detail can make a difference.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel XSi for this particular shot!

Inspiration

The black and white medium of photography is my favourite hands down! I believe there is so much more sophistication, grace and authenticity when subjecvts are captured through black and white. You're able to focus your energies on the message or theme of the photograph; you're really able to tell the difference between the detail and composition of the photo, than you would of a colour photograph. You are able to tell, feel, and understand so much more through the beautiful medium of black and white photography.

Editing

Yes, I did. I use Adobe Lightroom for the edits, putting much emphasis on the shadows, contrast, sharpness of detail and clarity of the photograph. I have highlighted certain areas over others and enhanced the clarity/intensity of certain parts of the photo, to draw attention to the areas of the photo that depict the very premise of the medium of black and white photography.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon Rebel T6i camera, as well as my 75-300 mm lens and my 50mm lens for portraits, as well as street and lifestyle photography.

Feedback

It's never about staging a photograph to look good and give it a beautiful aesthetic, as you want to capture these things naturally. This will only happen when you're able to make your subject feel comfortable enough to become their own person with you, as you capture those raw emotions and expressions. From merely having a conversation, to them feeling a certain way and you being able to capture that beautiful moment. That is what really matters.
