While working on White Island I had enough time to walk to the crater rim before the helicopter came to pick us up. The surface of the rim was soft and hollow sounding underfoot and gave me very little confidence to get much closer to the edge and it's 1000ft drop into the crater. The gas vents sounded like a jet plane from my vantage point.
