One afternoon on Sanibel Island, I watched brown pelicans diving for fish. Their ability to fly high, spot a fish in the water below, tuck their wings and become a plunging missile is admirable. They never missed the target while I was watching. After the dramatic plunge, they calmly sat in the waves, took the fish into their open bills as I watched the fish stretch the flexible pouch bulge and twist. Soon it quieted as the pelican swallowed the fish whole, not matter the size.
