Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Foz , Porto, Portugal .

Time

It was taken round 2 o'clock p.m., in November

Lighting

I choose this great renovated old school building which provide us the needed shadow as light was already getting to harsh.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D800 with my Nikon AF-S 28-70mm 1:2.8. To the shot I used with a 3,5 f number and 1/500 exposure time.

Inspiration

I always wanted to take some photos in the rain. I already had made some photo shooting with this beautiful girl, and tried a bunch of outfits. So This time I just asked her if she casually had some rain boots and she really had. We started taking pictures with some other outfits during the morning. The first idea for this boots was to shot near a lighthouse to get some water as rain was out of the question for the week. And we did. But the lack of water didn't pleased me in that scenario. So we kept shooting around, and suddenly I remembered of this old renovated school house. It was closed and abandoned so we had to climb in. we used several spots in the beautiful balcony and one of them was this stairs. We had some on the other side of the building entrance, but they were in the sun, witch at this point was to harsh for photography. But these ones, were simply perfect. On the shadow . so I asked her to sit down and give me a smile. The boots color and plastic material contrast with the blue of her jeans jacket and the old but renovated door and yellow building gave me the perfect shot. I find her very beautriful and love her smile so i thought this was it. The alternative best shot for the rain boots without the rain. and that's it.

Editing

Yes. As you can deduce by the numbers I choose for the shot, and in a shadow with no light or reflectors, I had to push some brightness and contrast, just enough to make her face shine a little more, as she has these beautiful eyes and smile. Color and color balance was also highlighted and slightly corrected on the shadows

In my camera bag

Well, I must confess that for some 6 years now I got a little lazy and my day by day gear is my iPhone 4s, and afterwards the 6s. In my 80's and 90's I always had my gear in my car trunk, so I could be prepared for any crazy and unexpected light or scenario, but time changed. Age and criminality stopped me of keep doing it. I was robbed once, and it was the turn. I kept my gear at my studio or home and just grab it to go to a photo shoot or video production. No more casual moments. Since I bought my first smartphone, I went completely crazy. The wide angle was hard to accept, I'm so more for close ups and details, but I bought Phone lenses and equipment and most of the time, i cropped images. Apps also helped as I could do post-processing all in one screen.

Feedback

Light. Be careful with sunlight, unless you like very contrast images. Shadows gives you better results and you always still have post for adjustments . Then think about your subject. here in this specific photo I wanted the boots to be in the spotlight so the best position was for the "model" to sit down and have them closer to the lens. Was she standing and you could never achieve this foreground of the subject. My low position helped also, I'm at the boots level, and so highlighting them to. The wide 28 was a helper to the highlighting of the foreground .
