Location
This shot was taken above Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The place is called Col De Jaman. Usually there is a road going up there but due to the snow the road was closed. We had to walk up for around 2 hours to reach the village Col De Jaman and it took us some additional 1.5 hours to reach this spot. We found that spot around 10 minutes before sunset, so a pretty good timing though.Time
Timing was everything during that day. We walked through the mountains around Lake Geneva for the full day for taking photos. Short before sunrise we decided to climb up the mountain peak about the village Col De Jaman just to get a good sunset view. Around 10 minutes before the sunset we found this spot, it was like finding the Holy Grail for us. The sunset was really short, only for around 5minutes. But it made the whole day totally worth it :)Lighting
Lightning was pretty crazy that day. During the day we just had the pure early winter sun until some clouds dropped in just short before the sunset. They turned the whole landscape in some beautiful soft light, so perfect for us to shoot against the sun :)Equipment
For outdoor photography I am using my Nikon D750. The camera is really though and robust, so basically perfect for outdoor stuff. The lens I am using is the Nikoor 14-24mm f2.8, a pure beauty when it comes to landscape photography! That's everything I am taking with me when hiking and climbing some mountains :) For those who are interested, the EXIF's are f4.5, 1/200 sec, ISO 160.Inspiration
This shot happened without planning and any research. I went down to Switzerland to visit a good friend of mine – Miika Klinga – a travel photographer from Finland. We wanted to shoot a totally different location during that visit. While sitting in the car to get to the original location Miika checked some Switzerland related Instagram feeds to get some inspiration. While checking Instagram he crashed into a young Swiss photographer – Johan Corminboeuf. As Instagram is a community based platform we just contacted Johan and asked him for a specific shot on his profile. He told us that this spot Col De Jaman is not that far away and that he is going to be there as well. So we just decided to give it a try, we changed our plan and drove towards Col De Jaman. Up there we met Johan and another Swiss guy – Loan Dao. We walked through the mountains the whole day, took lots of photos and had an amazing time. Finally, short before sunset we found this spot and Johan decided to become our model during that shot. The time frame to get some photos with that amazing light was around 5 minutes but we made it. This day was just awesome, we got some amazing shots and made some new friends.Editing
For outdoor photography I am shooting in RAW in order to get some more possibilities in terms of editing. Step 1 is the light tuning with the RAW-Converter (shadows up, lightning down) until I am dropping into Photoshop. What formed and pushed my recent style are the NIK Filters, they are just amazing. My favourite tool with the NIK Filters is the Color Efex Pro 4, especially with the Detail Extractor, Cross Processing and the Pro Contrast filters. /// Editors note for the ViewBug-Team: For some additional content I would be open to share the RAW-file to the View Bug community so that everyone can try to re-edit it? Could work also as a Contest "Best reediting".In my camera bag
Basically only the Nikon D750 with the Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 lens. As I am travelling a lot it is crucial to use as less as possible. For the landscape and outdoor photographs that I am taking the camera and the lens are everything I need. Through the experiences as travel photographer in Europe the main thing I've learned is that equipment does not matter that much - it is more about the lightning, the timing and the creativity.Feedback
Without going into any technical stuff – the most important thing is the own comfort zone. As soon as one is getting out of the comfort zone things are getting interesting. We thought about going back to the car already because we've been really exhausted after hiking around the whole day. But we still continued hiking and climbing in order to find some amazing spot. And we found it, far away of our own comfort zone.
