Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just after sunset from Point Woronzof Road adjacent to Anchorage International Airport

Time

Dusk

Lighting

The lighting was provided by a really spectacular sunset, with some pinpoints of light from the boat itself and a few highlights reflected on the water

Equipment

Canon 5DII and 400mm 5.6L

Inspiration

I'm an avid aviation photographer, so hanging around Anchorage International with its scenic backgrounds is one of the best places for aircraft photos. A rather large side benefit, is that I could also take in views like this if I just turned the other way.

Editing

I made quite a few small adjustments to this photo in Lightroom before exporting to Photoshop for the final touches. It was initially underexposed as a result of trying to use a faster shutter speed for the moving boat, but otherwise bringing down some highlights while also lightening the shadows a bit helped keep the bright sky from being too overpowering the details. A slight touch of vibrance and saturation helped bring out the colors.

In my camera bag

A lot of my photography involves a bit of travel - sometimes by air - so I try to pack light. For this trip I packed 2 camera bodies, and 3 lenses. A Canon 5Dii and 40D, and Canon lenses including a 400mm 5.6L, 70-200 2.8L IS, and a 24-105 4L. I also had a tripod and shutter release cable which came in handy for this particular shot (1/20s at 400mm)

Feedback

I was using a tripod at the time and for the most part I was taking sunset photos with the distant mountains, but I could see the boat approaching my field of view. Up to that point I had been using a lower ISO setting but to get a faster shutter speed I quickly raised it to 800, so that the boat wouldn't be a complete blur. Fortunately it was moving slow enough so that 1/20s didn't amount to much blur. The scene was great and would look nice on its own, but the boat crossing in front was pure luck.
