Behind The Lens

Location

Location for drop photography is not really relevant since you can setup anywhere you please.

Time

Drop photography can be done any time of day. For best results you need to be in a darker room with no ambient light creeping in.

Lighting

You don't think that something so small requires a lot of light. However, in this image I used 4 flashes at 1/128th power. Effectively this fast flashing light is what freezes the motion of the water.

Equipment

Here is where the list gets a little more involved. Naturally I had my camera (a Canon 7D), a macro lens, a tripod, 4 flashes. I have 1 Canon EX580 and 3 Yongnuo's. Then you need your liquid, drip pan and the magic tool iny arsenal would be my mjkzz water drip kit.

Inspiration

I have been intrigued with waterdrop drop photography for a few years. The shapes of the water and the technical challenge, all of that drew me. My first attempts included a zip lock bag and many, many exposures. I found a kit you can build but it came in the form of a little green board and about a million components. My husband put it together and I loved it! But I knew there was more!

Editing

Post processing was minimal. Some stray drops needed to be cloned out and the brightness lifted.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D and 7D. A 24-70, a 70-200 and my 100mm macro. And specifically for drops I love to create my own backdrops in Photoshop.

Feedback

It is time-consuming, but start small. See if you love it and grow from there. Follow people like Corrie White and Hugh Letheren. They we're pioneers in the early digital days. Experiment, the journey is half the fun. You learn to mix liquids to the consistency you require. You try different methods to color your water. I used simple food coloring here. You try different angles and light setups. It's never exactly the same and there is beauty in that. Most importantly, don't ever give up.
