Location
This picture was taken in the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. I was in Chicago with my family for the 1st time in Christmas holidays and my sister wanted to go mass. We look around the area and we found this magnificent Church.Time
Well, the mass was at 1 P.M, but the picture was taken after the mass. I had to wait until there were almost no people in the Church. It was at 2:40 pm. I remember that I have just acquire that wide angle lens and it was one of the first pictures that I took with it.Lighting
As you can see, the picture was taken inside the church and almost all the light used was artificial. Because of the winter, there was very little light entering through the stained glass, so the light from outside didn´t really affect the interior of the churchEquipment
Because it was a long trip from my hometown (I am from Barranquilla, Colombia), I travelled with the minimum gear possible. I used a Nikon D3100 with my new (2013) Tamron 10-24 with no tripod.Inspiration
As soon as I entered the Cathedral I saw all the beautiful details it had, especially in the ceiling. It’s known that the cathedrals used to be designed in a way to make the people feel small in front of the greatness of God. My goal was to transmit that sensation.Editing
I always shoot in RAW, so, I always do post-processing. Depending on what I am doing, I use different softwares. Sometimes I use Capture NX2 because I like the fidelity of the colors and sharpness of the Nikon gear. Then I converted to 16 bits Tiff and I finish the details in Photoshop. When I have a big lot of pictures, I use Adobe Lightroom, and when I am working in a single B&W picture I begin with Camera Raw and finish in Photoshop. In my camera bag
In my bag I usually pack my Nikon D7100, a Nikkor 50mm 1,8 lens, a Nikkor 35 mm 1,8 lens, the 1’.25 Tamron, and a small Manfrotto tripod. Sometimes I also pack a Nikkor 18-140 and a Rokinon Macro 90mm.Feedback
If I have the opportunity to take this picture again, I would prefer to use tripod, a lower ISO and a higher aperture. The goal would be to set the aperture to F8 to avoid some chromatic aberration and to make it less smooth. With the settings of the actual picture, using an f8 with ISO 100 would give me an exposition time of 1/1.3 sec, so the tripod will be a must.
