Location
We have a field of Lion's Mane wildflowers near where we live in the Andes Mountains in Cotacachi, Ecuador that is a favorite spot for the Sparkling Violetear Hummingbird to feed.Time
This photo was taken mid morning after the sun was high enough for the hummingbirds to become very active and feed. Early mornings are also less windy than later in the day resulting in a better shot.Lighting
The lighting in the morning is perfect because I was able to shoot in the same direction as the sunshine and was able to avoid any shadows.Equipment
Camera was a Canon Rebel T3i. I handheld the camera and did not use a flash. My lens was a Canon 75-300mm lens zoomed out to 300mm.Inspiration
I love hummingbirds. This field of Lion's Mane wildflowers is a favorite for a few species of hummingbird. I have found that if I stand still for 15 or 20 minutes, the hummingbirds become comfortable with my presence and come in close to me to feed. There is something about a hovering hummingbird that is magical.Editing
The only post processing I did was to sharpen the photo slightlyIn my camera bag
I normally carry a Canon Rebel T3i camera body with a Canon 75-300 mm zoom lens as well as an 18-55 mm wide angle lens.Feedback
Be patient. Stand as still as you can until the hummingbirds are comfortable with your presence. They will come close to feed and you can get a great shot.
