Location
This photo was taken from a hiking trail on the rim of the volcanic crater lake, Lake Cuicocha, in the northern Andes Mountains in EcuadorTime
The weather at Lake Cuicocha can change quickly and so a morning hike is ideal for photography. This photo was taken at approximately 10am so that I could take advantage of partly cloudy skies and a long range of visibility.Lighting
The lighting on the lake is best in the morning before the clouds start rolling down the slopes of the surrounding mountains.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS REBEL T3i camera with an 18 to 55mm lens set at a focal length of 40mm with an f-stop of 5.6 and an exposure time of 1/800 sec.Inspiration
I love the way that light plays off the color of the lake and the contrast to the islands and the rim of the volcano. The combination of white clouds and blue skies adds to the interest.Editing
I used Photoshop for post-processing the image. The only enhancements to the photo were to sharpen the photo slightly as well as improve the contrast slightlyIn my camera bag
I normally carry my Canon EOS REBEL T3i with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens as well as a Canon Zoom EF 75-300mm lens.Feedback
Try to capture an image contrasting water and land before the sky is covered with a thick layer of clouds. Shoot with a variety of f-stops and shutter speeds to maximize the contrast and make the image reflect what you see and feel while taking the photo. Do not be afraid to take the same photos from different angles. A slight variation in angle can improve the way the light reflects the colors of water, it can remove small obstacles (branches and plants) that detract from the photo and may not necessarily be noticeable until you edit the photo later.
