Behind The Lens

Location

Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Time

Late in the afternoon.

Lighting

The sun was low on the horizon. Sun was hitting the heron nicely.

Equipment

I was using my Nikon D5100 with a 55-300 lens, no flash was needed.

Inspiration

The lighting was so nice and the heron was very comfortable with me being at a close distance, the trees behind it made a nice background.

Editing

I didn't have to do a lot with this photo but made it a little sharper and added a little colour with iPhoto on my mac.

In my camera bag

Most of the time I am out with just my Nikon d5100 with the 55-300 lens but if I am going somewhere special or for a longer period of time I will take another lens 18-55, spare battery, small tripod sometimes a large tripod. Also take my Olympus TG3 along if I am going underwater or shooting macro.

Feedback

Practice as much as possible. You can learn a lot by practicing on the more common birds like pigeons, crows, seagulls, mallards and squirrels etc etc... Seek out the best spots to go, talk to other local photographers, birders or anyone out and about and ask if they have seen anything interesting. Take a photo workshop if possible. Be patient and always have your camera ready. I usually leave my camera on sports mode so I am always ready for those animals that are there one second and gone the next. If your figitting around with your setting a lot of those opritunities are lost. If the animal sticks around I will then experiment with my settings after I have taken some shots with more automatic settings.
