Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in our garden. It had been about a year our grand-mother had expired and she was an enthusiast with plants, the pots would be filled with blooming flowers throughout the year and managed seeds so most of the plants rose from previous year's seeds. And this was one of them left by her.

Time

I took this around 4-5 pm

Lighting

I'm writing this (in 2020) retrospectively from a photograph of 2016 therefore I could miss something out. As i walked outside after having tea, the natural lighting felt perfect. The sun I believe was behind the clouds( nearing the west horizon) but the rest of the sky was fairly clear and this flower pot was a little bit under a shade. After adjusting the manual controls, what i saw on the live screen felt perfect with a little bit under lit and yet the colours and contrast was perfect as it is.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon SX 160 IS. I did it handheld as the lighting was best at that time. And i did not use any flash.

Inspiration

My inspiration would be the colour of these flowers. They bloom so beautifully when they are timely watered, maintained and weeded out and I had been capturing these flowers since 2008 with my uncle's Sony 4.1 MP cybershot and any one's mobile phone. Actually, at first it was my grandmother that started asking me to photograph her flowers when i would visit her during the holidays. When they would be at their peak blooming season, she would ask to take pictures of them even though she would never see these photos later on. And slowly i realised how colourful these guys are and how I can keep them digitally saved made me start to capture flowers.

Editing

I remember doing very little post processing, maybe a few contrast and brightness and that was it because as mentioned earlier, the natural lighting was perfect.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon powershot SX 160 IS and when it comes to unexpected scenarios I capture it with my phone Redmi 5A. (Can someone donate me their old dslr pls :( ..... .... ....just kidding)

Feedback

I do not know about controlled artificial lighting, so for this, wait for the sun to hide behind the clouds but the rest of the sky should be fairly clear. This way, you'll not get that harsh sunlight striking from above and yet the rest of the sky being clear gives ample amount of light to help you do it without any tripod.
