Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at a studio I share with two others in Wigan(UK) called Zan Studio. We actually have two studio's one with large dark area where this was taken: it's actually styled on the first studio I ever used in where everything and I mean everything was painted matt black.

Time

This was shot in the afternoon, however being a studio shot it could have been any time of the day

Lighting

I did this with a three light set up 1) high up and to the back as a hairlight (200w) set at about half power 20 A beauty dish (220w) just over half power to the right 3) a large soft box (200w) just over half power to the left.

Equipment

Olympus OM-5 MK11 which was hand held with a Olympus Zuiko 75mm 1:1.8 Pro lens (beautiful piece of glass for portrait) with the lovely Jenny O'Sullivan one of my favourite muses. I use a flash trigger to set off the three lights.

Inspiration

Jenny inspired me in this series (they may become a book) we spent three hours together for this shoot; we called it the Firebird series. Jenny is a real joy to work with and very inspirational so you can expect (and I hope you will enjoy) more from Jenny

Editing

Compose in camera I was always taught and come from an era where we used a film, Jenny has incredibly clear and clean skin and is always superbly prepared so little processing is required - a little skin smoothing and cropping. Seriously very little - paying for proglass does make a difference honestly !!

In my camera bag

An Olympus OM-D5 Mk1, a Mk11, 5 Olympus Pro Lens 3 Tamron and 2 Sigma lenses. Filters and 2 flashes, Sony Video camera (for trains and planes) and a Rode Mic which fits all

Feedback

If your in our part of the world I would say come and visit us at our Studio, beyond that a good studio and working with your lights experiment lots. Think outside the box - talk to your model and if at first you don't succeed try try again. Youtube is good but human interaction is much better, We have a group shoot every Thursday with 8-10 photographers and we talk, we experiment, we work together with a model. Advice, help, message me feel free.
