Behind The Lens

Location

I live in a rural area here is South Florida about 30 minutes North of West Palm Beach. So on my route to work I always drive by a working cattle ranch and decided to say hello and asked if I could hang and and get some pictures of them and they agreed.

Time

This was just after sunrise and by chance they were there and it was the best time of day to get this scene.

Lighting

I like having the sun behind subjects. The clouds added a lot interest to the photo. Just got lucky with the ranchers that day, they’re usually pretty far out on the ranch.

Equipment

I always keep my RicohGR II with me at all times. It’s a 28mm wide fixed lens and the lens is very sharp. No flash or tripod.

Inspiration

I like documenting a real situation I don’t know much about. Then I watch and observe their process and try to capture the scene.

Editing

I use Lightroom and photoshop. I did some enhancements such as a bit of contrast and highlight adjustments. I use the Ricoh’s black and white processor setting to take the photo and edit from the jpeg in this instance because of the setting look. Most of the time I mostly use the raw image.

In my camera bag

I also have a Fujifilm X-H1 full set up with a 16-55 zoom and a 56mm 1.2 prime.

Feedback

Just like you always hear, bring some sort of a camera with you at all times. I like my phone for candid everyday shots but I always shoot with a camera with a bigger sensor to post on social media. Keep an eye on the locations around you!
