Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo just ahead of the quaint garrison town of Chakrata , India, about 50 km from the terai plains of the Doon valley as the ctow flies .

Time

I had been out since 5 AM and saw this beauty flitting about what seemed to be it's favourite perch at 6AM or so , had to wait for another half an hour , when this shot was materialised. The bonus was a yellow browed warbler who was flitting around .

Lighting

The light was mellow , with no haze due to sharp showers the night prior. I did however shift back and sideways to ensure that the Verditer FC itself was fully lit without any shadows

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D 3000 with a sigma 150- 600mm handheld.

Inspiration

India has a phenomenal diversity of wildlife and beautiful places. I try to give a peek into this aspect of my country through my work .

Editing

Thanks to the light , not much post processing was required, just a little tweaks to vibrance, saturation as this was a RAW file

In my camera bag

At this point of time , my Z6 is a must carry alongwith the native 24- 70 mm . Alongside are my Nikkon 50 mm 1.8 prime, nikkor 70 - 300mm and my sigma 150 - 600 mm plus the FTZ adaptor, spare batteries, manfrotto tripod and the venerable D 3000 as my backup . All this fits into my self designed camera back pack . Oh , not to forget the hot water thermos for tea .

Feedback

Planning in advance is very helpful, do read and speak with others who have travelled to the prospective spot . Observe the likely perching sites the evening prior and start super early wearing clothes that blend , so that the birds perceive you as part of the landscape. A lot of patience and a slice of luck are essential ingredients. Above all, enjoy the experience, the shots will follow. If not today ,then some other day ; but the fun you have tight now is irreplaceable.
