Worth being a few minutes late for work!
See all

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Ansdel overlooking Grannies Bay on the Ribble estuary in Lancashire, UK.

Time

Alternate title is how to be late for work! I used to get treated to some glorious sunrises and sunsets on my too and from work this was early morning in Autumn with the sun just breaking over the Pennines in the distance.

Lighting

Lighting is what nature provided that morning, the low sun peeking through the clouds turned the sky golden and contrasted with land it was quite spectacular. The shot is deliberately underexposed to keep the sun as a ball shining through the low cloud as seen by the eye rather than let the highlights blow out here.

Equipment

I took this with my Canon EOS 60D with Canon 24-105mm f4 L, hand held

Inspiration

I get treated to some lovely sunrises at this time of year and usually carry a camera, this particular morning there was a light mist over the river and the sun peeking over the hills made for a wonderful view. I decided that work could wait an extra 10 minutes to appreciate the sunrise.

Editing

As with all RAW files some processing in Lightroom is necessary, even with a deliberate underexposure highlights have taken down to show the sun more clearly and this has required a boost to shadows to stop the foreground from going completely black.

In my camera bag

Equipment depends on the day, I was staying in a Hotel so had kept my bag with me with a DSLR (then) or Mirrorless camera now plus a selection of lenses usually a wide angle zoom. a 24-105mm L series (my walkabout lens) and depending on what I'm doing some form of telephoto. The bag has a convenient loop for a tripod and pocket for ND filters (not used here)

Feedback

Either be ready to be up with the dawn or, as in my case, when the world is throwing lovely light like this as you on the way to work or on the way home carry a camera and be prepared to allow for a stop, not just to take a photo but appreciate the new day, and maybe have a good excuse for being late to work!
