Location
This photo was taken overlooking the quaint town of Arrowtown, on a particularly windy section of the crown Range.Time
I set up camera almost an hour after sunset, waiting for the sunset colours to emerge.Lighting
This shot used natural light. A brilliant but fading sunset and limited ambient light allowed for a long exposure shot. I took a few shots waiting for a few cars to pass in either direction at the same time.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 60D with a wide angle lens and mounted on a sturdy tripod.Inspiration
The Crown Range is a beautiful part of New Zealand and I was interested in incorporating a human aspect (in this case a road) into a landscape shot.Editing
As this shot was only a single shot (not a blending of multiple shots) it required limited editing. The foreground exposure was brightened a little to better match the exposure of the sky and the saturation of the greens was boosted slightly to contrast the natural sunset tones. In my camera bag
For landscape shoots I don't go anywhere with my wide angle lenses (Canon 10-22mm and Samyang 14mm f2.8 lenses). Since taking this shot I have upgraded to a full frame DSLR and am now branching into travel and portrait photography using natural light.Feedback
New Zealand has a variety of beautiful landscapes. The trick is finding perspectives and angles that are unique. I drove up and down the Crown Range a few times before I found spot that I though looked suitably different but pleasing to my eye.
