Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Butchart Gardens, BC, Canada, a short bus ride outside of Victoria. The only way to not get a good flower photo at Butchart Gardens is to forget your camera.

Time

It was mid afternoon (2:43, if you must know), which is not usually a great time of day for photography. In this case, however, the flower is brightly lit and the background is in shadow, which makes the flower pop.

Lighting

The flower was in full sun and the background was in deep shadow. There is no background distraction.

Equipment

Nikon D300 with 18 to 200 mm lens at 70 mm. 1/400 sec, f:10, ISO 200.

Inspiration

There were lots of flowers in Butchart Gardens beckoning me. I liked this flower’s color.

Editing

Very little post-processing other than cropping tight around the flower.

In my camera bag

I was traveling, so just the Nikon D300 and the 18-200 mm lens with another battery and another CF card. Back in the hotel room was a charger and more CF cards.

Feedback

Look for a flower standing out from a non-distracting background.
