My two year old Norwegian Forest Cat after his first cat show. This was his way of telling me he felt the experience was very tiring.

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken out of town at a hotel.

Time

We had just gotten back to the hotel after a long day of showing at a cat show in North Texas, and were exhausted. Probably about 7 pm.

Lighting

Probably the best thing to share about the lighting is the lack there of. :) At that time of the evening all the lights that were available were on the bed stands or in the bathroom. So, I had to use my flash to be able to get his expression captured. Because it was not a planned shot, it was very lucky that it worked out so well!

Equipment

I use Panasonic Lumix cameras, just love them! I have two of them with different sized zooms built into them. It was a handheld shot using only the camera and it's flash. The camera had been in a high speed mode as to catch action shots in the show hall when Windsor was being judged.

Inspiration

Ouijakatz Windsor is a Norwegian Forest Cat. The breed is very rare as it has now only been here in the US for going on 40 years in it's original form. It was brought over by the Vikings as mousers on their ships while bringing grain to the original 13 American colonies. But, the ships did not come in, unload, and refuel, sometimes it was months before they went back, so the cats were allowed to escape into the woods of New England. The Maine Coon breed, which you have probably seen in the USA, has been genetically proven to be evolved from the NFC and a domestic unknown short hair. This was Windsor's first adult show (8 months old) and as you can see he was exhausted and decided he needed rest. I thought he looked very nice next to the white blanket so called his name to look at me. Just as I did, you can see he did the biggest yawn ever!!! You could not have planned this better! I love spontaneity in natural shots!

Editing

I did crop the photo a bit to highlight Windsor more and cause less room distractions. That is all though.

In my camera bag

I usually do Nature Photography and sign them Naturally, copywrite symbol, the date, and my name. So, I do not have the time to be setting up tripods and changing lenses when I am outdoors. The birds, bugs, animals, and butterflies are not going to stop for me and pose to get their pictures exactly like I want them! LOL Also, I am getting older, so do not feel like being tired out too soon from lugging too much stuff around. So, as I said before I have two cameras. a Panasonic Lumix DNC-1000 which has a 25-400 zoom lens on it. I also carry a Panasonic Lumix DNC-FZ200 which has a 25-600mm zoom. Both of the cameras also have a anti-shake feature on them, if your hands shake when you get excited at a photo opportunity surprises you, as mine do! ;) I do keep lens covers, cleaning stuff for the camera, bug spray, and water and snacks for me along too! My car does have a tripod in it if for some reason I feel I need it. Does not happen often though.

Feedback

Take pics of things that excite you!! Use and develop your creative eye. That is what will keep you motivated! I put aside doing a lot of what interested me artistically with working and raising five children. But now is the time to do your exploring! Do things you enjoy, and you will find photo opportunities that you will love! Do not feel stupid looking at photo guide books, teaching websites, etc. I took these online while recouping from numerous kidney surgeries and believe me, I do not use a lot of the things that they say to. But, they did give me the basics, and let me use my imagination in the way that I was able to catch on camera things that I feel excited about, and pics that I can share with others. The responses to the photos that I post, show, and gift, give me such pleasure knowing I made people happy seeing things that they might not be able to otherwise. Plus, I can always look back at some of the most wonderful times in my life and know that they will live on in my pictures.
