Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in our home (model is my son) - sitting on the floor in the hallway, because THAT was where the light was just what I wanted. I had a stencil which I wanted to use to throw some shadow on my son's face, and we were both goofing off, when I mentioned the movie Casablanca, we'd watched it not long before this, so that is where the name of the photo comes from, Bogie's immortalised words.

Time

This was in the evening after we had both got home from work, and had dinner, sitting chatting about some photography ideas I had, and I asked him to be my model. He's such a good sport that son of mine, has done stuff like this for me at other times, but not so much in the past 5 years, he's married now and obviously doesn't live with me (sadface here, I have no male models to use)

Lighting

The lighting was quite simple, coming from a room to the side (I didn't have any lights for photography at that stage so had to make do with what was around the house) it's amazing what you can achieve with ordinary household lights.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D3100, the 18-55mm kit lens. No flash, no tripod, just the most basic of equipment.

Inspiration

As I mentioned earlier, we had watched Casablanca a few days previously, and that had me thinking about Moroccan architecture and the ornate woodwork in some of their buildings, the stencil was used to cast shadows to give the whole Casablanca feel I was after.

Editing

I darkened the image a little and upped the contrast, then converted to B&W, that was about it.

In my camera bag

NikonD5000, 18-55mm kit lens (yes, it's still giving great service) a 70 - 300mm telephoto lens, a couple of remote releases, IR filters, CPL, lens ball, extra SD cards, flashlight, cleaning cloth.

Feedback

Have a handsome son who is a good sport and happy to model for you.
