Pilgrimage, as an act of religious observance, is as old as religion itself. For Christians, the El Camino is perhaps the best known of all attracting tens of thousands each year to make part or all of the 500 miles of the most popular route. During medieval times, pilgrimages were undertaken for a variety of reasons but perhaps, most frequently, as a form of penance for some dark deed. This painting of a single pilgrim in religious garb enroute to the next destination was intended to reflect something of that dichotomy between darkness and light.
