Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in the basement of one of my university's buildings. It is where we did all of our studio shoots for a while and it was a makeshift set up.

Time

This shot was taken later at night, probably close to 7 or 8. I shot this as an addition to my personal work after mentoring a fashion shoot for my school's student-run magazine.

Lighting

I only used one light, a medium sized soft box. My department does not have many resources so I was limited to a soft box and an umbrella. Since I had a more dramatic image in mind, I chose the soft box to create those harsher shadows.

Equipment

This was shot using a Nikon D7100 with a 70-200 f2.8 lens. I used an alienbee strobe and soft box provided by my university.

Inspiration

I wanted to have a fashion shot with drama. Im constantly trying to create dramatic and more artistic fashion photos. I love simple backdrops with one light.

Editing

Besodes converting to black and white, I only adjusted some basic exposure and contrast settings.

In my camera bag

I always have my D7100, 70-200 f2.8, and 24-70 f2.8. I will often carry one speedlight with me as well.

Feedback

Having the modeling light on the strobe really helped my reduce the amount of time to find my shot. This was important since I was on limited time. The end goal was to have Rembrandt lighting. I also made sure to habe some gaps in between her body and arms to try to make her look more feminine and smaller overall.
