Behind The Lens

Location

My friend and I were on an overnight ferry from Riga to Stockholm, doing a tour of the Baltic...

Time

For some reason I woke up around 5 am and noticed magical golden light coming through the porthole of our cabin...

Lighting

I always joke how the urge to capture a gorgeous sunrise with my camera is one of the few things that can get me out of bed at a decent hour. There is nothing more glorious than morning lighting, the magnificent start of a brand-new day.

Equipment

My most loyal trip companion is a simple super zoom digital camera, a Nikon P520. An obvious, yet useful piece of advice: make sure you take enough fully charged spare batteries when you and your camera are going on an adventure.

Inspiration

... I woke up around 5 am and noticed magical golden light coming through the porthole of our cabin. I knew just what to do. Without wasting a second, I rushed to the top deck in pyjamas and gasped at the view. The cold Baltic air was perfectly still, the ferry's rocking whir the only thing disturbing the calmness. Taking such beautiful photos is always a moment of pure bliss — I completely failed to realize my fingers were freezing until I was back inside. That trip is one of my best memories of grad school.

Editing

This was taken and uploaded a while back, so I wouldn't remember the precise details, but being an amateur photographer, I usually just do basic brightness/contrast adjustments. I believe a good photo speaks for itself and never needs much editing.

In my camera bag

Just the camera, spare batteries and memory cards. Sometimes I also use a simple tripod — great for shooting people, moving objects and high-exposure scenes.

Feedback

My advice is, just follow your artistic gut and your heart! Whether it's climbing a mountain or waking up in the middle of the night all for that perfect shot — go for it and don't let anything stop you.
