Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken not far from my home, on pasture land along the Thompson River in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. I am a self-taught photographer. I watch instructional photography videos online and then, inspired, I’ll go out and apply the techniques I’ve learned.
Time
This was taken on March 8, 2016, at 9:07AM. It was a very dark and foggy morning, when the rising mist from the Thompson River pervaded the scene.
Lighting
I waited for the sun to appear in order to give this photo an ethereal quality.
Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D5300, with a 35mm f/1.4 prime lens, ISO 100, 0.6 shutter speed, F/16 aperture, and with a tripod.
Inspiration
I was looking for a barn because I love the classic, old barn photos. We were heading down to the Jamieson Creek Road and on the way was this old barn carpeted with fog, and I quickly told my husband to pull over.
Editing
I developed the raw files in Lightroom. I pulled down my exposure to - 1.97, highlights - 38, shadow +100, whites -21, black -69. I also adjusted the color using split toning.
In my camera bag
My Nikon D5300 body, 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm f/1.4 prime lens, colored filters, ND filters, and polarizing filter.
Feedback
My best advice is to regard even the simplest, humblest subject with respect, and to see in your mind’s eye the finished art photograph you know it will yield. This place is very close to my home, and so familiar and ordinary, no one pauses when passing by. But when conditions are right, and one waits for the perfect light, it becomes imbued with mystery, as though surrounded by spirits and legend.
