The German cargo ship the RMS Mülheim wrecked on the Cornish coastline in March 2003. There's an interesting story behind the fate of this doomed ship, on the night of March 22nd the RMS Mülheim had departed Cork in Ireland and was heading back to Germany with over 2000 tonnes of scrap car plastic on board. When the ship was passing the far west of the English coastline there was moderate visibility and minor fog patches. However, the officer in charge of the ship at the time somehow managed to get his trousers trapped in a lever on his chair when trying to get up and rendered himself unconscious. By the time he had recovered the moment was too late and the ship was wrecked on the granite rocks of the Cornish coast. The authorities did manage to salvage some of the ship when the tide and weather permitted, however some of the plastic and diesel was already in the ocean. Moral of the story - don't caught out with your trousers down! The section of the ship in this image is unsalvageable and remains a part of the landscape forever more. It's battered by huge storms and waves and there are massive bits of cast iron scattered everywhere. If you like this photo - don't forget to check out my other work.
