A handful of Colorado models and photographers (myself included) convoyed down to the Great Sand Dunes to have a day playing in the sand. After pushing two cars out of some back-tracking sand pits and waiting out a quick rain storm, we finally were able to start shooting in the sand!Time
We spent the entire day at the Great Sand Dunes. I had been waiting a while for my favorite friend and model Kristen to be free to work with. This image was taken around late afternoon.Lighting
I always bring two to three small speedlights with me to shoots, but I usually wind up working with the natural light available. Apparently I like a challenge! If the sun is too harsh and I can't find any way around sharp shadows, then I'll pull out my speedlights to light my subject. This image is an example of natural light work.Equipment
Canon 5d mark iii and my 85 1.2 lens.Inspiration
Kristen is a beautiful person inside and out. I was excited to be able to play with her soft, sand-toned skin against the wet gritty sand where the mountain snow had run off. We both went home with HUNDREDS of mosquito bites after those twenty minutes in the wet sand.Editing
I use Lightroom for my basic edits. Thankfully Kristen is so naturally beautiful that I didn't have any touch ups to knock out in photoshop. This is just a quick black and white edit with the addition of a bit of a sepia overtone. In my camera bag
I'm a Canon girl through and through. I have one very worn-around-the-edges 5dMarkiii, a 16-35 2.8, a 24-104 4.0, an 85 1.2, and a 70-200 2.8. I just recently purchased a Yongnuo 35 2.0 ....I really want the canon 35, but couldn't wait any longer so I got the Yongnou to tide me over.Feedback
Bring bug spray with you!!! Seriously though...don't be afraid to get down and dirty. To get this shot I was down in the mosquito-ridden mountain-snow cold stream with my model.
