Part of an ongoing photographic project called "embondiment"
What is the Embodiment project all about?
South Africa has just celebrated 20 years of democracy and boasts the most progressive constitution in the world, but the question begs to be asked, ‘are we free?’ And by ‘we’, who am I referring to?
This project, apptly titled ‘EMBODIMENT’, is unique and of historical value. It hopes to capture the daily lives of gay women throughout South Africa. The imagery is not shocking or laden with political statement, on the contrary much can be accomplished with a softer voice. Finding beauty in simple acts; a meal shared, a walk in the rain, exercising, these simple , every day acts form part of the lives of a part of society often overlooked and marginalized.
“This collection of images was conceptualised out of the desire to find a sense of belonging within the L.G.B.T community.
Encompassing many aspects of sexual fluidity, these pictures hope to capture a snapshot of the private moments of a community that is often quite reserved, unexposed and more often than not quite secretive.
My intention is to highlighting the everyday, the ‘normal’, and by implication, the fact that we all desire very much the same things;
A home, financial stability, but most importantly love.
My hope is that by capturing these portraits, showing us as we go about our daily lives, doing the same things everyone else does (with perhaps just a dash of glitter and one or two feather boas!) our interconnectedness, our ‘sameness’, our humanness, is exposed.”
