Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Nottingham Goose Fair in 2016

Time

Mid-evening. The fair is held in late-September/early October, so the dark night sky had fully arrived by that point, helping the lights of the rides to stand out even more,

Lighting

Different rides have different planes of motion, so where you stand is up to you. I chose the gallopers here because they only move in one direction, and they don't take up as much of the frame as some of the bigger thrill rides.

Equipment

Canon 6D, think this was with a 24-70 EF L equipped. And a tripod.

Inspiration

My older brother's taken one or two shots like this before, and as I lived in north Nottingham (I was a student at Nottingham Trent Uni at the time), I decided it would be a relatively easy trip out that didn't cost me anything.

Editing

Mostly just done in Adobe Camera Raw; played with the highlights, some of the tones of the colours. Exaggerated the light trails a bit in terms of brightness.

In my camera bag

My 6D, a 50mm f/1.8 for most go-to close-up stuff and a 70-200 L for anything a bit further away.

Feedback

Be very patient, expect to be fighting your way through crowds and keep an eye on your equipment. If it's an autumn event like this one, wrap up warm. Experiment with shutter speeds to get different styles of light trail. Try not to get in anyone's way if possible, and check that the owners of the rides you're photographing are happy with it; some ride owners put up signs asking for no commercial photography, so I tend to avoid those rides completely.
