Behind The Lens

Location

I made this image in Virginia City NV, this historic Catholic church is Saint Mary's in the Mountains. I've taken several college level photography classes and continue to learn through multiple resources.

Time

This was a cold October evening, I had waited for the parking lot to clear out, I set up my tripod to allow for a deep aperture and slower shutter speed to capture the beautiful details of this lovely old church.

Lighting

I was looking for a nice glow and vibrant colors so the slower shutter speed and low ISO were important to capture the light coming off the church lighting, the night sky was quite dark and no additional lighting was added.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000, Nikon lens 16 - 80mm, 2.8 - 4.0 speed, place on a tripod and leveled to the sidewalk at the base of the church.

Inspiration

I was participating in a photo walk that day and new I wanted and evening image so I stayed in town until the time was right. Saint Mary's holds a lot of history for Virginia City and I am always drawn to photographing it. I had been waiting for an evening with no moon and cold clear skies to capture the light from the building only to give a natural glow.

Editing

I utilize Lightroom for post-processing, I cropped the file to include the details important to the image, corrected the white balance just a bit, very little adjustment to the shadows and highlights were needed.

In my camera bag

I now bring my Nikon D600, unless I'm photographing a wedding and then I add my Nikon D810 also, lens choices are the 50mm 1.4, 85 mm 1.8 and 24mm -70 mm zoom for events and weddings. I also carry extra batteries, SD cards and an off camera flash with lightstand and tripod. Several items in my car include reflectors, sand bags and extra tripods.

Feedback

Evening photography takes patience, cold weather wear, gloves that allow you to work your camera and knowledge of what to expect from the weather. Practice on a subject close to home several times prior to attempting to make your final image to allow for adjustments required in camera to capture the image you have envisioned.
