Behind The Lens

Location

I took this outside of my city's community center about seven years ago when I was 14.

Time

It was the middle of the day and very hot, and I was transitioning between classes. The community center was home to my junior high until our building was finished, and it was a weird experience, but provided plenty of material for photo practice!

Lighting

The lighting was initially very harsh thanks to the afternoon sun, but the clouds passing overhead blessed me with very soft lighting every once in a while.

Equipment

I used my very first camera for this handheld shot: a small but reliable 12 MP Canon Powershot SX130 IS. Everything else was up to the elements!

Inspiration

I was sitting in the garden waiting for one of my friends to walk to class with, when I turned to look directly at this flower. My camera was already in my hand, and having just learned what aperture meant, I decided to experiment with Manual mode for the first time. The flower itself was a large part of the inspiration, too - The way its petals were all so alike in every way really caught my eye.

Editing

This was before I knew anything at all about editing, so the tweaks I made to the sharpness, saturation, and contrast were on a simple editing website I found somewhere.

In my camera bag

I've recently taken a big step in my photography game with the purchase of a proper Canon DSLR (a Canon Rebel T7) with two kit lens. I make sure I ALWAYS have my 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens in my bag, along with a tripod and an extra battery. The lens is always my go-to since it allows for so much diversity without the bulkiness of multiple lenses.

Feedback

Be aware of the conditions around you, and use a tripod if one is available. The wind or a shaky hand can easily ruin an otherwise perfect shot. Also be aware of where you're standing in front of the Sun to avoid unflattering shadows in your photos.
