Behind The Lens

Location

In my parent's back garden in Launceston, Cornwall, UK.

Time

It was early afternoon when I took this, taking advantage of the strength of light.

Lighting

Because I was photographing from above the high, but not overhead, sun position and it's strength of light was perfect to bring out the butterflies colours.

Equipment

Canon Rebel T2i with a Canon 55-250mm efs lens.

Inspiration

The colours of the butterfly contrasting with the browns of the wood chippings and the purple of the flowers.

Editing

I adjust the gamma to remove the digital fog (grey/white cast) that digital cameras leave over the top of a photograph and some contrast adjustments along with colour correcting.

In my camera bag

Canon Rebel T2i, Canon 50mm, Canon 18-55mm efs, Canon 55-250mm efs, Sigma 17-35mm EX, Sigma 150-600mm contemporary lens, Gopro hero 3 black edition, spare Gopro battery, Gopro accessories, Jessops 645AF flash unit, Cokin P series filter holder, 2 ND filters, 3 graduated ND filters, 2 spare camera batteries, AA and AAA batteries and charger, third party digital remote release, hot shoe converter, cleaning cloths, Leathermans multi tool, head torch, 2 memory cards, binoculars, weather proof camera cover, RSPB bird identity book, British wildlife identity book, lens hoods.

Feedback

Its all about composition, contrasting colours and lighting. Natural lighting is the best type of lighting in Photography, it brings out colours naturally creating a feeling of true life. Positioning of the subject is normally best of centre, based around the rule of thirds but in this case I felt it better to have the subject in the centre of the photograph as it worked well with the flowers. Vibrant, contrasting colours make a subject stand out (along with the shadow) and catch the viewers eye.
