Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a campsite in County Durham. It was a misty night with a great moon, so the conditions were perfect for something spooky.

Time

Very late at night of course! We were on set shooting a short film, and everyone on site was gathered around one of two camp fires, having s few drinks.

Lighting

There was a full moon that night, coupled with lots of ground mist. It gave everything a very ethereal quality.

Equipment

This was just taken on my phone, I can't remember which model I had at the time but I always choose my phone based on the camera quality. The phone I have now is a Galaxy K Zoom, but I'm not certain that this was taken with the same one.

Inspiration

Most people were sat around the big fire pit (the short film was Viking-based so we had a camp that doubled as the set), but I was sat at a smaller campfire with some reenactors who were part of the crew. As everything looked so spooky, we suggested trying to scare the people at the main fire. The idea we can up with was for someone to stand far off, perfectly still but visible in the mist and moonlight wearing a cloak and mask. We used a small red light to make the features of the mask stand out. I decided I had to take a few shots, especially so the person in the mask could have an idea of what they looked like!

Editing

I cropped the image but that's about it.

In my camera bag

I really only use my mobile for photos, so no other specialist equipment.

Feedback

This one was all about taking advantage of some great natural conditions. This is why I like to have a mobile with a good camera, its always with me so if I spot something that would make a good shot I don't miss it. And of course it helps if you're hanging round Viking reenactors who have some cool kit!
