The photo was taken in a garden hotel in Madagascar. This was made with one of my close friend from Germany.Time
Precisely, this was taken on September 14, 2014 at 12:07 PM, in the middle of the day. The midday might not be the best period of time to make compositions (outdoor conceptual portrait) but we managed to do it as best we could though.Lighting
As I said, this was taken at 12 o’clock in the middle of the day. With the midday sun at its highest elevation in the clean sky, the white sandy ground of the garden hotel was truly bright and bounced beautifully the light everything around. So, with my friend we tried to find out a cool spot where this big white natural reflector would lit practically her eyes. I personally wanted to captivate her blue eyes as a mirror with my own dark silhouette in it so as to be intriguing and neutral at the same time. We made it well, I believe. This image is one of my best composition that I have made as a portrait photographer.Equipment
This image was made with my eyes, heart, feelings and soul. This was shot on a basic camera that anyone can use. :) No flash and no other equipment was involved.Inspiration
I have this project to make compositions with real close-ups of eyes’ color. I am personally intrigued and fascinated by human eyes and faces. That day, my great friend had this fabric on to cover up her head and to protect her eyes from the dust during our road trip. I wanted to use the beautiful texture of her scarf as a frame for the shot in contrast with her brown shot hair. Also, I wanted to match the soft green turquoise color of that with her iris.Editing
In this case, I shot in jpeg format (it was not the best option, I had no choice but I dealt with it that day!). So, I had to not do a lot of processing to get what I want from it. I developed it by popping up a bit the color and accentuated the micro-contrasts in her eyes. Then I sharpened every detail by using a high pass layer mask.In my camera bag
I am a student researcher so I often do some travels, and I like my equipment to be all-round use. It gives me the opportunity to make compositions at my ease. I pack a gripped Canon 550D, simply because that’s what I can afford for now (it would be great to get a robust body one), with an all-in-one zoom lens 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 with image stabilization for wide angle and telephotos. The second is one of my favourite a 50mm f/1.8 lens for portrait and close-ups. The final one is the very compact shockproof, dustproof and waterproof Canon PowerShot D10 which I can use underwater and in any case of bad weather and such.Feedback
You have the power to make the composition, not the gear which is a tool that you just need to master first. You have the idea, not the camera. Always think positively of making the most of what you’ve got in your hands, and no matter the circumstances be patient, open minded and flexible. Look around for the most suitable spot and adapt your idea to the situation so as to get the best of your concept. Having in your mind the precise idea of what you want is really important wherever you are. And never forget to enjoy the moment!
