Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a old unused railway tunnel in Herberton, Queensland, Australia. It was originally used for tin mining. The tracks lead to other small towns and you can see a beautiful waterfall along the way.

Time

This was taken in the middle of the day! I had taken many ballet pics with this talented young lady. I wanted the light to be bright outside the tunnel as it gives amazing portrait light at the openings. We were walking to the other end of the tunnel and the ballerina was walking in front of me, as we got closer to the other end I noticed her stunning silhouette so we spent quite a bit of time in different poses, enjoying the amazing light behind her.

Lighting

The bright midday light behind her enabled me to capture the perfect ballerina silhouette as well as the antique structure of the walls of the old railway tunnel.

Equipment

I used my beloved Nikon D750, which performs beautifully in low light, and my Tamron 24-70 lens. It was just a tad scary in there, I was waiting for a snake to slither across my feet, so keeping the camera as still as possible was a challenge!

Inspiration

I hadn't planned to take this pic, it was spur of the moment as I saw the silhouette of the ballerina against the bright light at the end of the tunnel.

Editing

The post-processing on this picture was very simple. I made it black and white, centred it slightly and burned the ballerina so the silhouette was more prominent. I increased the contrast so the light around the walls at the entrance was prominent.

In my camera bag

I don't own a lot of equipment but because I photograph ballerinas quite a bit, I carry my D750, Tamron 24-70 2.8, Nikon 50 1.8 and a Godox TT600 speedlight with a Godox X1-T to get high speed shots with off-camera flash.

Feedback

Keep you eye open! The best pics tend to turn up when you least expect it!!
