Location
This was taken during a trip to the Falkland Islands at West Point, which is near San Carlos on the Falkland Sound. We had to trek across the boggy peat fields for about an hour to reach this spot.Time
This will have been taken around midday as it was part of our tour of West Falkland, starting at Stanley, driving to Goose Green then north past San Carlos and along the track to Stanley along North Camp Road.Lighting
The weather was good for a change. It was overcast but made for a great portrait of the horse.Equipment
I used my trusty EOS 7D and a 17-40mm lens hand held.Inspiration
I wanted to capture the landscape, but foreground interest was lacking so the horse made a great focal point.Editing
I worked on the horse to bring out the colour from the shadows. Otherwise no special treatment.In my camera bag
I normally have a variety of kit, not all of it can fit in my bag! On this occasion I was travelling light, just my camera, 17-40mm and 100-400mm lens. Normally I'd have my 24-105mm and 50mm lenses too, as well as my godox lights.Feedback
Lighting is key. The sky needs to be interesting too, if its too bland, it draws the eye away from the subject. I was lucky there was some colour in the clouds. Approach animals slowly too, give them time to get used to your presence - if you walk straight towards them you're more likely to frighten them off.
