Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a wolf rehab center in New Jersey. I had been invited to go to the rehab and I was actually really excited, I'd never been to one. I expected to see wolves that where native to our part of the country, but I found so much more.

Time

The day was overcast and cool, so it was a perfect day to be outside shooting.

Lighting

I find that for shooting outside, the perfect lighting is an overcast sky. It enables me to not worry so much about shadows. It also seems that colors are better for photographing.

Equipment

I have always used Nikon camera's, ever since I picked up my first camera at 16. I shoot now with a Nikon D7000. It comes down to a preference of which brand of Camera that you use. I just prefer my Nikon's.

Inspiration

I never expected to find Arctic Wolves at the rehab center. I was instantly mesmerized by their incredible yellow eyes and the massive size. I spent almost the whole day watching them and shooting them. This was the alfa female of the pack and she just spent her day watching over her pack. That constant gaze of hers watching over her pack, I needed to try and capture that.

Editing

I was lucky I didn't have to do much processing. I thought for sure I would have to take a lot of the blue out, because of the white fur but because of the overcast day, they came out really well.

In my camera bag

I like to have a light bag. My main camera, a back-up camera (you never know). One macro lens, my 300 lens and one everyday lens.

Feedback

Spend time watching your pack, so you can anticipate their movements. Hope for an overcast day and lots of patience.
