Two of my best girlfriends and I drove to the Sand Dunes National Monument in Mosca, CO for a fun day in the sun with our cameras, costumes and props. It looks much warmer than it was, the temps were quite low. The sand is so rough on cameras I left my DSLR in the car and took a point and shoot instead.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the National Sand Dunes Monument in Mosca, Colorado. Two other photographer friends and I ventured out there for a day of photography.

Time

This was taken in the bright afternoon light. My friend thought it would be fun to do a nude out there so she jumped right in to be the model. At first she was posed a bit awkward partially in and out of the picture frame. So I had her move completely to the other side and hold up her hair.

Lighting

I normally prefer soft diffused lighting so this was a challenge for me. In the end I think the bright light and blue sky was exactly perfect for the scene.

Equipment

I typically shoot with a Canon Mark III and Canon 6D but on this day I used a cheap little sony point and shoot because of past experiences with the sand. I previously lost a camera to the sand in the dunes. It blew into the body and ruined it. So on this day I left the DSLR's in the car.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the mountains and sand but also by how the curves of her body mimicked the curves of the dunes.

Editing

I did pull down the brightness and exposure a bit in post, I also added a matte finish to smooth out some of the contrasty areas.

In my camera bag

I'm primarily a natural light portrait photographer and shoot with a Canon Mark III and Canon 6D. I even pull out my old Rebel T3 from time to time or my Minolta SLR when I'm really feeling nostalgic. I shoot portraits mainly with my Canon 85mm but also use a 50mm and 35mm when I needed a wider angle. I use a 14mm manual lens for shooting astrophotography.

Feedback

If you want to try this yourself, find a willing model first and just go with the elements that are given to you. The trek was hard up into the dunes with all the things we dragged up there but it was worth it. Was this my normal lighting situation? No, but I just worked with what was before me. We all shot some beautiful photos that day.
