This summer I, along with friends, sailed up the inter coastal waterway of Alaska to Glacier Bay. One of the stops we made was in the township of Kake. More an outpost then a town, Kake is the home to around 600 people and a stream where, when the salmon are spawning, is a wonderful place to view bears in the wild.
Upon arrival, we set the anchor and took our dingy to shore. I stepped onto land and happened to look up at the tattered American flag, which flies during daylight hours at the end of the dock. In that rustic environment the worn appearance seemed beautiful.
I looked away for a moment and when I looked back, the flag had a guardian. What I saw touched me deeply.
