Back in the day these stunningly beautiful yet domineering blots on most common landscapes were lunatic asylums for the extreme poor. Even the title sounds terrible and frightful. Me and my brother managed to get inside one close to where we lived. It was perhaps a place of hell for those that once inhabited the asylum but for me and my brother it was quite an amazing place to explore. It such a shame that these buildings are pulled down and used as bedding for new houses and flats without so much as a memento of it - that is why photos are so important.
