One powerful technique preached by my favorite photographer Sam Abell is photograhing people from the back. They are not aware of being photographed (resulting in a more natural image). Their facial expressions are not shown, which allows more room for interpretation and guesswork by the viewer (this is often a good thing in a photograph). Also importantly, in some cases this eliminates the need for a model release, since it is more difficult to recognize a person from the back.

The title of the image is from one of my favorite songs by the Dire Straits.
