Behind The Lens

Location

These are all my own original photos. This is a series of 3 photos I took on separate occasions with many layers. The first layer is a picture of my grandson leaning over the back of my couch watching me work around the house. The second layer is a photo I took while taking photography classes, motion, catching rain in a pink planter. The butterflies are of one butterfly taken in my back yard.

Time

I love to shoot in the morning, when the natural light is perfect or early evening.

Lighting

I always like my photos to be taken in natural lighting. Very rarely do I use flash. Early am is best for natural lighting. Know your cameras capabilities for natural light.

Equipment

My photos are never planned, when inspired to take a photo I grab my Sony NEX-F3 and shoot free hand in raw with natural lighting.

Inspiration

My love for my grandson, butterflies, nature and photography inspired my creativity for this specific creation. This particular piece of work has been worked on several times to bring it to this point. It started out as a project for a class as a beginner. I have gone back to it several times as I learned more about post processing to tweak it to make this what it is today.

Editing

This piece was originally created for a final project in my first media design class. The project required at least 3 layers of three different photos. You could download from the computer or use your own. The three photos I used are my original photos. The first layer of my grandson originally had no post processing. The second layer of the pink water was applied with a low opacity for the fish bowl effect. The rest of the layers of butterflies are one butterfly cut from the original photo, strategically placed and manipulated to show different forms of flight.

In my camera bag

I always carry my bag with me for that unexpected moment. My Sony NEX-F3 camera with 3 Sony lenses, macro, zoom lens and the original 55 mm lens that came with the body are my staples. In case of rain, I have a plastic bag readily handy to protect my camera and lenses. Though I prefer to shoot free hand I carry a Profoto mini tripod for macro shots. I love macro photography so it gets used regularly. A lens cloth, extra caps (in case I lose one), quarters, snack bars, camera instruction book and my fishing license go with me everywhere in my bag.

Feedback

Allow yourself to be ready for that moment of inspiration because you just don't know when it will creep up. See the trees trough the forest, meaning look beyond your immediate surroundings and be patient. Be creative regularly, the more creative you are, the more creative you become.
