Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taking on a country back road near my home. I live in a farmland community and during the harvest months there are many hay bales laid out across different fields.

Time

This photo was taken in the late afternoon near the golden hour. Unless it's a cloudy day I try to take most of my photos in the late afternoon or evening hours. The sun is not as harsh during that time of day. However, as you can see they are still some shadows in this photo. Many landscape photos that you want to show a large depth of field need to be taking with sufficient light such as a field of hay bales.

Lighting

Overall this photo is filled with dramatic colors and lighting. I added the sun rays in the background to enhance this dramatic lighting effect. Most of my landscape photography I like to edit with bold coloring and some dramatic lighting. This is just my style that reflects my artistic personality.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7100 with my favorite 35mm 1.8 prime lens.

Inspiration

I live in a small, rural farmland community. I love taking landscapes of barns, hay bales, sunsets, and cornfields. This is the beauty and landscape of my hometown. I have great respect for our hard working farmers.

Editing

Yes! I replaced the sky background in this photo. I am always looking for a "wow" factor as I would say in my photos. Sometimes I do manage to capture a beautiful sunset or sky and trust me I get very excited about it. However, a plain blue or gray sky sometimes just doesn't wow me so I will edit a sky overlay. I enjoy photos that have color pop and dramatic light. I guess I would say that is my style. I am always looking for something that draws my viewers in toward the photo.

In my camera bag

I recently purchased a Nikon D750. I carry it with my Nikon D7100 as a back up camera body. Prime lens are my favorite because they offer larger apertures when I need more light. I have the Nikon 35mm 1.8 prime with me and would have to say it is my favorite lens. I also have the Nikon 85mm 1.8 prime lens and Nikon 28-300mm VR zoom lens. I usually carry a tripod just in case I need it.

Feedback

I would say to go out in your community and take photos of anything that you find interesting. Don't be afraid to add a different background or add bold colors and lighting. Photography is subjective and not everyone will like saturation and color and that is ok. Just have fun playing with your editing sometimes. You may learn something new or find a new style you like. Photography is my passion and I enjoy it because it takes me places I would never of thought of going. It lets me see the world in new, different perspectives and most of all its fun!
