Beetle-deer (lat Lucanus cervus.) Large beetle from the genus Lucanus as a part of a family of stags. It is the largest beetle that lives in Europe: some individuals males nominative subspecies can reach lengths of up to 86 - 91 mm, with an average length of males 70-74 mm. It is also the second largest beetle (after relic woodcutter), living on the territory of Russia.
Stag beetle found in oak groves and deciduous forests with an admixture of oak in Europe, the Near East, Turkey, Iran and North Africa. Males are distinguished by a well-developed and enlarged mandibles, which are converted into t. N. "Horns". The larvae develop into dead wood of deciduous trees, predominantly oak wood for 4-6 years.
Stag beetles are found mainly rare and locally. The range of species is reduced, due to which it is brought in security documents and the Red Books of many European countries, including Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Belarus, as from 1982 stag beetle tunes during the second application of the Berne Convention. The main causes of population decline stag beetle is massive deforestation, sanitary "cleansing" of forests, uncontrolled collecting beetles collectors and casual parties.
